Lionheart Adventures was founded on the belief that life's greatest adventures aren't going to happen from your couch. We offer an ever expanding range of outdoor sporting events designed to challenge and excite everyone from beginners to seasoned veterans. We're looking forward to seeing you out there!

Adventure racing academy

April 27, 28 & 29, 2018

WHAT YOU’LL LEARN: We will train you on the following skills: 

1. Orienteering, Land Navigation, & Map Reading

  • Using a compass and Adventure Racing UTM plotter
  • Advanced map reading
  • Orienteering at night
  • Navigating in various weather conditions
  • Navigating by committee 

2. Ropes: Rappelling, Ascending, & Top Rope Climbing

  • Select, inspect, wear and care for your mountaineering gear
  • Proper rappel technique, from hooking up to proper body position
  • Perform self arrest, recovery, and self rescue.
  • Proper ascending techniques and fluid energy application.
  • Do a main line exchange while ascending.
  • Proper top rope bouldering/climbing technique.
  • Select your climbing route, proper commands, hand holds, and proper belay technique.
  • Bowline, figure 8, prussic and square knot.

3. Canoeing & Kayaking

  • Characteristics of various boats, paddles, and PFDs
  • Wilderness boat repair
  • How to properly read river currents
  • Paddle strokes: the power stroke, sweep stroke, draw stroke, and back stroke
  • Proper river rescue techniques and rescue throw line applications
  • Self rescue and boat recovery
  • Aggressively swimming in white water
  • How to improve paddling endurance

4. Expedition Mountain Biking

  • Properly select, maintain, and inspect your mountain bike and gear
  • Wilderness bike repair
  • Technical riding skills
  • Navigate obstacles, the ready attack position, powering through turns, and more
  • Proper climbing and descending technique
  • Pushing or towing teammates
  • Orienteering while biking

5. Assessing & Managing Risk

  • How to determine which paths/routes to take
  • How to avoid dangers
  • General wilderness safety

We reserve the right to cancel or change any part of the curiculum in order to maintain safety. Academy director Doug Crytzer hosts one of the nations longest running Adventure Racing Academy in the United States with more then 250 students graduating since 2002.

A truly one-of-a-kind experience awaits in our first annual KILT Challenge. Part adventure race, part Highland games, this one is going to be an absolute blast!

10/27/18 OBX Adventure Challenge

This exhilarating race includes biking (mountain or hybrid), trail running/trekking, kayaking, coasteering, orienteering, and a secret treasure map challenge!

The LandShark SwimRun

June 23rd, 2018

Yellow Creek State Park hosts our first annual SwimRun event! This event will consist of a "mock Otillo" style race, where participants run and swim in multiple alternating sections along a lake and trail course layout. This means that you'll be carrying all of your run and swim gear with you for the entire race! Some course details will stay under wraps until the day of the race, but essentially the course will alternate between swimming and running multiple times, with distances totaling approximately 1 to 2 miles of water and 10 to 15 miles of land. Think of it as a combination trail run and open water swim. Landsharks welcome!

What you'll need:

1. Running shoes - and a method of attaching your shoes to yourself for the swim sections. Remember, your shoes will be WET so consider this in your choice of footwear!

2. Swim gear - as you deem appropriate. Personal flotation devices (PFD's) will be allowed, however must be worn or carried for the duration of the event. 


Short Course - $100

Long Course - $200

The price of your registration includes:

- Food and aid stations along the course

- Participant shirt

- Timing and results service

- Post race recovery meal

- Participant swim cap

- Waterproof race map

- Prizes for top 3 finishers in each class

- Bragging rights after acheiving true LandShark status!
